Have you noticed the recycled ornaments on two trees near the front office? The Parkland Green Team would like you to think about these facts:
If every family in Canada reduced its weekly waste during the holidays by just one kilogram, 34,000 tonnes of garbage would be eliminated.
In Canada the annual waste from gift-wrap and shopping bags equals about 545,000 tonnes.
If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.
If we each sent one less card, we'd save 50,000 cubic yards of paper.
If every family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.
From Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, household waste increases by more than 25%

Huge congratulations to Parkland Senior Girls basketball team who entered one of the biggest tournaments in the province this past weekend in Victoria and finished second. It is the first time in the 21 year history of the tournament that a Parkland Senior girls team has played in a championship game. The girls lost in the final of the Gold division game to Lord Tweedsmuir of Vancouver. Another first was the fact that the team was seeded as the second favorite to win the gold division tournament ahead of schools like Stelly's, St Michaels, Spectrum, and Mt Doug. The team was lead by Kristy Gallagher who averaged over 30 points a game. Two other seniors Safhanna Hussein and Breanna Clooney were a big part of the success this weekend. Two juniors, Arianne Stevenson, who is second on the team in scoring, and Emma Dennis, who is third on the team in scoring, also played significant roles. Lauren Fanelli, Sarah Gibson, Katie Isfeld, Michaela Pennell and Joanna Wollweber who are all juniors as well playing on the senior team, made great contributions.  The senior girls basketball team represented Parkland with much pride and brought a new trophy back for as a reward for great play. Way to go girls  - your school is proud of you!
