Batman, Ironman and Batgirl are portrayed as regular human beings who are "super" because of hard work and achievement. Dr. Paul Zehr from the University of Victoria invites you to explore the kinesiology, neuroscience and biomedical underpinnings of these superheroes and answer the question, "Is there a superhero in you?"
Friday, June 2, 2-3pm at the Sidney Public Library.
NOTE: Dr. Zehr's talk is in support of the Van Isle Comic Con. It's coming up on Sunday, June 11 at the Mary Winspear.

HOMESTAY FAMILIES WANTED IN SCHOOL DISTRICT 63: Are you and your family interested in making a difference in the lives of students from other countries? Saanich Schools have been welcoming International students for over 15 years. Our success has led to increased interest in our educational program, and we need more warm and caring families to host our next students, for the 2017 - 2018 school year. SCHOLARSHIPS & GRAD 2017 NOTICES: see notice boards & Mr. Choo for details of scholarships, grants, deadlines.

Still some scholarships available that are exclusive to Parkland students. Contact Mr. Choo if you're interested in the $1500 United Peninsula Lodge #24 Freemason Scholarship, the $1000 Sidney Rotary Scholarship or the $500 Conservative Party Civic Engagement Scholarship.  Deadlines are end of May - apply soon!

Freemasons' United Peninsula Lodge #24 have generously increased scholarship and extended deadline:  Any Parkland student with a history of community engagement, academic success and  ambition to proceed to Canadian college or university may apply.  Financial need considered. Two $1000 scholarships - Deadline: May 31st.  Students who have already applied do not need to re-apply.  Contact Mr. Choo for details.


Good news for our fine arts students: $750 Diane Cross Award for the Arts deadline postponed to June 1st.  Email or meet Mr. Choo.

A new $2000 scholarship in memory of Constable Sarah Beckett has been established to award a student entering the field of law enforcement.  Deadline is July 1st.  Applicant must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident.  Please contact Mr. Choo for details.

CAREER CENTRE, CAREER EVENTS, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB AND VOLUNTEER POSTINGS:

NEW JOB: local farm looking for two students for outside work - weeding and landscape maintenance. Farm is flexible on work days but needs 15 to 20 hours per week. Could expand into summer job. Pay: $13 per hour. An excellent opportunity for those interested in landscape, gardening, agriculture, horticulture or property maintenance career. Five acres of formal gardens; lawns with many different plant varieties and planting conditions. Farm sells eggs, beef, lamb, blackberries and kiwis commercially. Fruit and nut orchard with apples, pears, pecans, hazelnuts, walnuts and filberts. See Ms. McNamee for application and resume suggestions.

SUMMER BABYSITTING JOB IN CENTRAL SAANICH: 2 boys, 8 and 11, for five weeks this summer - July 17 to Aug 4, and Aug 21 to Sept 1. $11 per hour. See Ms. McNamee for complete details.

Schools in Victoria and West Coast Adventure College are parternering to offer an amazing 8 - week program for students interested in exploring the ADVENTURE TOURISM INDUSTRY. FREE  RETAIL TRAINING: AVAILABLE IN SIDNEY, AND ONE OPENING IN BRENTWOOD BAY, JUNE AND JULY - one day a week for four weeks - learn how to operate cash register and point-of-sale machine. Strengthen customer service skills and learn how to be safe in the workplace. An excellent way to gain employability skills - see Ms. McNamee FRIDAY for registration details. (in Brentwood Bay June 4 to June 25; in Sidney from July 9 to July 30).

5. ACCESS AWARENESS EVENT: City of Sidney, and hosted at Shoal Centre - created in conjunction with Rick Hansen's "Man in Motion", to promote changes in facilities and infrastructure to remove barriers for those with mobility issues.
6. SIDNEY LITERARY FESTIVAL looking for volunteers with creative writing skills, or editing skills. See Ms. McNamee for information.


AFTER SCHOOL TUTORIAL:   EVERY DAY AFTER SCHOOL - except Mondays - TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AFTER SCHOOL, in the Learning Centre Room 204.
MATH HELP CENTRE:
Monday and Wednesday after school: 3 to 4 p.m., Rm 201; and Thursday morning before school - 7:15 to 8:15 in Rm 112.

ENGLISH HELP CENTRE:   Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at lunch in the Learning Centre (room 204), staffed by a retired English teacher. Please see Ms. Chicanot if you have any questions about this.

SIDES HELP CENTRE: has started on Tuesday and Thursdays after school in the career centre. Come and get help with any SIDES course. See Ms. Anderson in the counselling office if you have questions.
CULTURAL ROOM TUTORING IS NOW AVAILABLE: Every day after school from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., in the CULTURAL ROOM. Please see Ms. Mack for assistance with assignments, studying for tests, or other tutoring needs.



ALL STUDENTS: every day after school math help is available in room 201 ( across from the fishbowl lab).  If you missed math class due to illness or need some tutorial help you are welcome to attend.  Don't forget--every day after school there is math help available!


MEZZANINE IN GYM AREA: TO USE THIS AREA, PLEASE INQUIRE WITH P.E. teachers.


MUSIC REHEARSALS ALL YEAR:
JAZZ BAND - Monday & Wednesday; 7 a.m.; CONCERT BAND - Tuesday & Thursday, 7 a.m.; CHOIR - Friday, 7 a.m. ALL REHEARSALS TAKE PLACE IN THE MUSIC ROOM.
