Welcome to the 2018/19 school year!
Lizanne Chicanot, Principal
Aaron Buckham, Vice Principal

I hope you have all had a healthy and restful summer. It’s hard to believe that we are ready to start another school year. We are certainly looking forward to seeing you all again and to getting to know our new grade 9 students.

This is a very exciting year for us at Parkland as we launch the International Baccalaureate program. Three years ago hosting an IB program at Parkland was just an idea and now here we are at the start of our inaugural year. We have 30 grade 11 students who will make up our first cohort and they are as keen as ever to get started. We are proud to be the only English speaking public school on Vancouver Island offering the International Baccalaureate!

The IB program is one of a number of interesting offerings that are available at Parkland. Parkland has three thriving academies (Sailing, Hockey, Judo), an exiting Marine program, dynamic arts and music opportunities, a speciality in computer technology (come see our VR room!), a wide number of trade and career offerings as well as numerous sports and athletics opportunities.

All Parkland students would have received preliminary timetables in June. Some changes to the master timetable were made over the summer which will affect some students’ individual timetables (in most cases it would simply impact the sequence of their classes). If your child wants to request a timetable change Mr. Choo (one of our counsellors) is available for course changes on August 28th and 29th and Ms. Rioux (our other counsellor) is available for course changes on August 29 and 31.

If you have any questions or your child needs support of any sort, please contact the office and we will be sure to help. And please mark your calendars—Thursday September 13th from 5:30-7:30 is Meet the Teacher night followed by a Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meeting at 7:30. We welcome and encourage continued involvement in your son/daughter’s education here at Parkland.

One good way to stay informed with what is happening at Parkland is to subscribe to Parkland forums. By doing so you will receive email notifications on Parkland events and news. If you haven't already, you can subscribe to our forums by going to the Parkland website and on the left hand side you will see a heading entitled "Forum Subscriptions". Click there and follow the prompts.

I hope to meet you all throughout the year--I like to get to know students and their families as much as possible.

Take care and here's to a great year to come!

Sincerely,

Lizanne Chicanot
Principal
Parkland Secondary School
