ALL STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: BUS REGISTRATIONS  WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER FEBRUARY 1, FOR THE REST OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR.  Please go on-line to register, or pick up paper application from front office TODAY!


ATTENTION SEMESTER 1 ART STUDENTS: please pick up your sketchbooks and final projects by the end of this week. Anything not claimed by the end of FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2 will be thrown out or recycled.



PARKLAND MUSICAL THEATRE:  INTO THE WOODS  -  Evening show runs THURSDAY, FRIDAY, UNTIL Saturday, February 3, 2018. Theatre doors open at 6:40 p.m. - show begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. All evening ticket prices are $15.00.


ALSO: special SATURDAY MATINEE PERFORMANCES - SATURDAY FEBRUARY 3 - for our younger audiences -  Matinee tickets are $12.00. Theatre doors open at 1:40 p.m.; show begins promptly at 2:00 p.m. This show is appropriate for kids 6 years and up.

NEWCOMERS OPEN HOUSE for IMMIGRANTS & REFUGEES - Friday February 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. - @ Beacon Employment Services, Sidney. Connect with service providers, agencies, community members. Everyone welcome!



SATURDAY FEBRUARY 3 - JOIN GREATER VICTORIA GREEN TEAM - clear invasive species plants from local parks - contact Caitlyn @ 250-812-8133 if you are interested. This Saturday is @ Fort Rodd Hill, but there may be some events closer to peninsula later on.



ALL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN SAILING: There will be a SAILING meeting, Monday February 5th at lunch in Room 103. Please come to this meeting if you are interested in signing up for sailing this spring.



INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: the deadline for the Mount Washington Ski Trip application is Friday, February 9th. See Ms. McRae in Counselling for information.


ALL GRADS: repeat GT SESSION - FRIDAY FEBRUARY 16 from 2:`5 p.m. to 4 0.m. in the Learning Commons - all grads are required to attend at least one GT session in prep for GRAD qualification. Be sure to attend if you need additional assistance following session one - THE DEADLINE IS COMING FAST!


SATURDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2018 - ANNUAL EXPLORE UVIC DAY - full day event which enables students to visit UVIC, and explore INFORMATION FAIR on all aspects of admissions, co-op education, financial aid, student awards, athletics and recreation, residence services. WITT - WOMEN IN TRADES & TECHNOLOGY EXPLORATION DAY - Wednesday February 21, 2018 - @ CAMOSUN COLLEGE from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Explore trades & technologies career pathways - electricians, auto service techs, sheet metal fabricators, carpenters, civil engineering, computer science, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering. FUN, HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES - see Ms. McNamee to register! PARKLAND STUDENTS WILL BE ATTENDING, BUSES PROVIDED.


SATURDAY FEBRUARY 24 - YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM JOB FAIR @ Shoal Centre, Sidney - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. - meet employers with summer and part-time job openings! Door prizes for the first 50 registrants!



SATURDAY FEBRUARY 24 - SOLDIER FOR A DAY - from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. - 715 Bay Street, Victoria, B.C. For all students interested in CANADIAN ARMED FORCES RESERVES, how a soldier is trained, what equipment and vehicles are used. Experience a portion of the annual fitness test, and receive basic instruction in marching and drill. SPACE IS LIMITED, so early registration is encouraged. SOUTHERN VANCOUVER ISLAND SKILLS CANADA REGIONAL COMPETITION - DISCOVER TRADES & TECHNOLOGY EVENT: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 2018 @ CAMOSUN COLLEGE - INTERURBAN CAMPUS. Some of our Parkland students will participate in this annual competition. Parents and spectators are welcome! For more info, go to:

Congratulations to the Jr Girls Basketball team on their impressive win over St. Margaret's last night, Way to go girls!

CONGRATULATIONS SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM on an impressive & gritty performance Tuesday night at Stelly's! A comment from their athletic director sums it up perfectly: "Parkland girls were nothing but class & should be commended on their sportsmanship, their work ethic, & the example they set for their fellow students!" Way to go girls, Parkland is super proud of you!

NEW JOBS:

1. SHAW CENTRE FOR THE SALISH SEA: cashier, information, merchandising, telephone reception, clean-up - $12 per hour, part-time, Saturdays and Sundays, usually 10 to 12 hours per week. Some evenings required. See Ms. McNamee.

2. NORTH SAANICH YARD WORK - work alongside avid gardener & artist, start ASAP. Four hours a week, $15.00 per hour.

3. ELK LAKE YARD AND HOUSEWORK - two students needed; one outside and one inside help required;  Saturdays for 6 hours each day, starting in March @ $12.00 per hour.

4. KITTIWAKE PLACE, NORTH SAANICH - branch and leaf collection and bagging; 4 hours, $12.00 per hour.


VOLUNTEER POSTINGS:

1. NEW VOLUNTEER POSTING - Volunteers needed - looking for energetic, patient & FUN volunteers for the English Language Learners group! For the past 3 years Parkland students have volunteered with elementary school-aged English language learners at North Saanich Middle School, in partnership with the Inter-Cultural Association & ELL students in SD63. Volunteers  partner with a little buddy, to play games, draw, talk, & enjoy a snack together. The group meets at NSMS every Thursday after school, starting February 8 to March 15. If interested, see Ms. McNamee ASAP.


NEW TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES COMING UP:

1. FOOD SAFE LEVEL 1 - MONDAY MARCH 5 - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. - food service, food retail, food processing. $50 fee.

2. WORK SAFE FOR YEP - Friday May 4 - 3 hour FREE WORKSHOP; great for resume.

3. ALERT FIRST AID - SATURDAY MAY 5 - 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. - basic CPR, first aid, hands-on training. $50 registration.

4. THREE OPENINGS - RETAIL TRAINING - SIDNEY & BRENTWOOD BAY. Sundays, March - April - May. See Ms. McNamee.

                

TUTORIALS AND COURSE WORK ASSISTANCE: LOTS OF HELP AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT AVAILABLE!


1. TUTORIALS IN LEARNING CENTRE: REMINDER TO ALL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS - TUTORIAL IS AVAILABLE daily after school. Wednesday & Friday tutorial times are best for longer tests & assignments.


2. LEARNING COMMONS SUPPORT: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday day after school until 3:40 p.m., Wednesday & Friday until 3:35 p.m. PLEASE NOTE:  ELL TUTOR also available Wednesday & Friday after school.
