They ended their season with a record 23 wins and 6 losses. Arianne Stevenson along with Lauren Fanelli led the team as captains and were recognized on more than one occasion with awards for their elite level of play. Emma Dennis and Sarah Gibson also were recognized through the season for their outstanding play with awards. Full length version:
The Junior Girls basketball team participated in the Island championships this past weekend. They played hard against the odds, like they had all year. They won their first game against Port Alberni on Thursday, setting up a semi final with Claremont on Friday. In a hard fought game with the Victoria rivals and an injury to one of the starters, the girls fell just short of making it to the Island championship game with a 45-41 loss. It was also a lost opportunity to go to Provincials as there were only a very disputed two berths given to the Island. The team showed great courage after the loss, to beat host Wellington the following morning, and went on to play Dover Bay for third and fourth. Arianne Stevenson, Lauren Fanelli, Sarah Gibson and Emma Dennis were all selected as PLAYERS OF THE GAME. In our four games. Lauren Fanelli was selected to the Island All Star team.
Miel Guerrera Alva, Charlotte Junker, Jamie Cocu, Olivia Kuyvenhoven, Karla Cumming Olivia Erfle and Caitlin Gault all played well and contributed to the success we had this year. The girls had 9 wins -1 loss in league play where they played Oak Bay, Stellys, Claremont, St Michaels and Mt Doug . They won the junior girls division at the Victoria Christmas Tournament one of the largest tournaments in the province. They came in third at the Victoria Tipoff tournament, Second at the Vancouver Riverside tournament, Second in the City championship tournament and finally came within 4 points of going to provincials.
What is most amazing is the junior girls basketball team did all of this against schools two and three times their size. The junior girls basketball team had a record 23 wins and 6 losses when the season ended. Arianne Stevenson along with Lauren Fanelli led the team as captains and were recognized on more than one occasion with awards for their elite level off play. . Emma Dennis and Sarah Gibson also were recognized through the season for their outstanding play with awards. Finally the team and coaches would like to thank OUR school for its amazing support, especially the people that came to watch our games. You know who you are but we will mention a few: Mr. Chan, Mr. Sutton, Ms. Macnamee, Mr. Young, Mr. Anjalavicc, Ms. Irving, Mrs. Stellck, the Junior Boys basketball team, Mr. Pires, Mrs Gribling. Last, we would like to take a minute to send a SPECIAL thanks to our community, our parents AND TWO INCREDIBLE people Mr. Buckham and Ms. Chicanot whose genuine caring and appreciation for our year is something that we want you to know we will not soon forget. See you all next season!
